Changhsing Tangyuan Shaved Ice (長興圓仔冰), the Time-Honored Ice Shop in Douliu, Yunlin, Taiwan Est. 1941

Sep. 25, 2020 was the 3rd day of the journey when my friend and I travelled around Taiwan by public bike and railway. That day we rode the public bikes, Youbikes, from Downtown Taichung to Yuanlin Station (員林車站), Changhua. After that, we chose to get on the train to Douliu Station (斗六車站), Yunlin because here was no Youbike spot southerner than Yuanlin, Changhua.

That afternoon we went to Changhsing Tangyuan Shaved Ice (長興圓仔冰) for dessert after we arrived in Douliu, Yunlin. It was a historic ice shop established since 1941, Showa 16, when Taiwan still belonged to the Empire of Japan.

Here were not many customers when we visited the ice shop. Luckily, we could had our seats soon!

I ordered a dish of mixed mochi (綜合麻糬) at 30 TWD (= 1.04 USD) and a bowl of rice porridge ice (米糕冰) at 40 TWD (= 1.39 USD).

Our desserts were soon served after placing our order!

The mixed mochi (綜合麻糬) was very hot! There were 2 kinds of powders, sesame and peanut powder, on the mochi. The hot and springy mochi tasted very good with both sesame and peanut powder. Personally speaking, I preferred peanuts to sesame!

The rice porridge ice (米糕冰) was relatively rare in Taiwan's other cities.

The rice porridge ice seemed the rice porridge topped with some shaved ice. The rice porridge looked like the mixed porridge based on sticky rice and some beans like mung beans and soy beans.

The shaved ice melted very soon, and the rice porridge ice quickly became the cool rice porridge. Its sweetness was still acceptable and moderate!

After enjoying the tasty traditional desserts, we walked back to Douliu Station (斗六車站), Yunlin and got on the train to our destination that day, Downtown Chiayi.
