Keelung Xiaosan Intestine Circle (基隆孝三大腸圈), the Locally Unique Must-Eat near Keelung Harbor, Keelung, Taiwan!
In the morning of Jul. 21, 2020, my friend and I boarded the ferry, Taima Star (台馬之星), in Matsu, Taiwan. After 8-hour sailing, we arrived at Keelung Harbor (基隆港), Keelung, Taiwan. Because we didn't have lunch on the ferry, we'd like to enjoy our dinner near Keelung Harbor.
Therefore, we walked to Keelung Xiaosan Intestine Circle (基隆孝三大腸圈) on Xiao 3rd Road. It was established since 1968.
The signature here was, of course, the intestine circle. It was called a sticky rice sausage in Taiwan's other cities. Additionally, here were the chikuwa (吉古拉) and various pig organs served like pig's heart, intestine and diaphragm.
We, 2 people, just ordered 2 servings of intestine circles (大腸圈) at 40 TWD (= 1.36 USD) per serving. Moreover, we ordered a serving of pork jowl (嘴巴肉) at 40 TWD (= 1.36 USD) and chikuwa (吉古拉) at 20 TWD (= 0.68 USD).
After a while, our dishes were all served!
At first, I'd like to try the signature, intestine circles! The intestine circle was full of sticky rice inside. It tasted great with the shallot aroma!
With the special sweet and spicy sauce, the intestine circle became even more delicious!
Probably because the intestine circles were handmade, the outer layer of intestine circles here seemed thicker and more springy for me than the sticky rice sausages in Taiwan's other cities.
After that, I'd like to had the chikuwa (吉古拉). The chikuwa (吉古拉) originate from Japanese food (竹輪, chikuwa). It came to Taiwan since Taiwan's Japanese Period.
The chikuwa mainly based on the surimi. It tasted springy and fantastic with the dipping sauce!
The thick-cut pork jowl was slightly springy and not gamy at all!
With the sweet and spicy sauce, we couldn't help but enjoy the pork jowl one bite after another!
