Zhangmen Brewing, the Master of Craft Beers in Taichung, Taiwan

On Feb. 11, 2017, my friend and I went to Taichung, Taiwan from Taipei, Taiwan by bus in the early morning for the craft beer seminar. Although there was the traffic jam in Hsinchu, Taiwan, we eventually arrived at Zhangmen Brewing in Taichung, Taiwan at noon!

As soon as we had seats at the brewery, we found a socket and USB ports closed to our seats! That's a really useful design for people nowadays!

The high-ceilinged design made the restaurant look spacious and us feel comfortable.

Zhangmen Brewing in Taichungn serves 32 kinds of craft beers! The seminar that day focused on the following six in order: No.3 sour frenzy(酸酸), No.2 Helles(呵拎), No.12 Vienna Lager(沈默騎士), No.4 74 Turbo IPA, No.14 Dunkelweizen(煙燻小麥), No.21 Imperial Stout(X教授).

I have to mention the knowledge about ABV and IBU. The ABV on the menu is Alcohol by volume. IBU means International Bitterness Units. They both help you decide which beer is closed to your preference.

I'd like to share my thoughts with you here!

I think the No.3 sour frenzy(酸酸) plays a good role as an appetizing beer! I prefer to drink it before meals because of its unique slightly sour taste.

No.12 沈默騎士(Vienna Lager)
No.4 74 Turbo IPA
The IBU of the above three kinds of beer (No.2 呵拎(Helles), No.12 沈默騎士(Vienna Lager), No.4 74 Turbo IPA) is proportional to the odor intensity of malt.
(IBU: No.4 74 Turbo IPA > No.12 沈默騎士(Vienna Lager) > No.2 呵拎(Helles))
Because the hops provide bitterness to balance the sweetness of the malt.

The above three with the following deep fried food were too alluring to resist!

The popcorn chicken and squid 
It was hard to stop when starting eating the deep fried food! Both honey mustard and tartar were good dipping sauces! And the craft beer made them more amazing!

But I suggest that you should not order too much deep fried food at the same time. Or the deep fried food will cool down before you eat them out. The deep fried food here is great but we all know that deep fried food is always best when it's hot!

Taiwanese luwei (soy sauce braise)
I thought the luwei (soy sauce braise) here also went well with the craft beers, not like the luwei at other places with too strong spice or herb odor. It's the must-try dish here! 

The next one was my favorite that day, duck breast pita! The smoked duck breast, melted cheese and salsa sauce made the duck breast pita perfect!

I thought the most fantastic combo that day was the duck breast pita and No.14 煙燻小麥(Dunkelweizen)! The dunkelweizen and cheese made the combo perfect!

Although the No.14 煙燻小麥(Dunkelweizen) and pepperoni pizza were also a good choice, I still loved the duck breast pita and No.14 煙燻小麥(Dunkelweizen) more!

No.21 X教授(Imperial Stout)
No.21 X教授(Imperial Stout) was the only craft beer that day I didn't like because it tasted so bitter! Its bitterness was from hops with a taste like black coffee. I usually have black coffee with desserts. But there was no dessert that day. I'd have spoken highly of the craft beer if there had been some desserts. But I still strongly recommend this to the ones who love the bitterness of hops more!

After the seminar, my friend and I tried 2 additional cups of craft beer.

No. 29 丁酉雞(Belgian Dark Strong Ale)
No. 29 丁酉雞(Belgian Dark Strong Ale) was the one I asked the bartender to recommend. I told him that I preferred the sweet one. It tasted so sweet and smooth that I regarded it as a dessert and digestif.


I thought No. 1 Ding Ding Ding(Weizenbock) was the most smooth that day, but I didn't have any other strong impression.

In conclusion, you have up to 32 kinds of craft beers to choose when you come to Zhangmen Brewing! I think everyone has his/her taste. In fact I found that everyone who attended the seminar that day had totally different preference, but everyone had his/her favorite that day. For example, I think the duck breast pita and No.14 煙燻小麥(Dunkelweizen) is an amazing combo!

And the food here goes pretty well with the craft beer here!
