Tianweijia (田味家), Serving the Heavenly Apricot Sweet Soup and Traditional Hakka Dessert in Chishang, Taitung, Taiwan!
Sep. 28, 2020 was the 6th day of the journey when my friend and I travelled around Taiwan by public bike and railway. At noon we had the casserole lamb noodle soup for lunch in Zhiben, Taitung (台東知本). After that, it started to rain, so we cancelled the plan about renting bicycles and then got on the train to Chishang , Taitung (台東池上).
We arrived at Tianweijia (田味家) near Chishang Station (池上車站) and then enjoyed some desserts here!
After we had our seats, I took a look at the menu and then placed my order at the counter.
Tianweijia (田味家) served the traditional Taiwanese desserts like apricot tea (杏仁茶), mochi (麻糬) and shaved ice (剉冰).
I just ordered a bowl of apricot sweet soup (杏仁甜湯) at 60 TWD (= 2.1 USD), a dish of niuwenshui (牛汶水) at 35 TWD (= 1.22 USD) and a loaf of youtiao (油條) at 10 TWD (= 0.35 USD).
Soon I got all I ordered! I could started to enjoy the leisure dessert time!
At first, I'd like to try the apricot sweet soup (杏仁甜湯).
The food ingredients were various in the apricot sweet soup (杏仁甜湯). They consisted of azuki beans (紅豆), runner beans (花豆), mung beans (綠豆), snow fungus (白木耳), chickpeas (雪蓮子) and adlays (薏仁). With the good-smelling apricot tea, the sweet soup tasted smooth, moderate and mild!
The crispy youtiao (油條) became softer after I dipped it with some apricot tea. The texture stroke a balance with the rich aroma of apricot!
Niuwenshui (牛汶水) was the traditional Hakka dessert for the break time when farming. Because the Hakka farmers used to drive the buffaloes into the water to cool down in summers, only the head and back of buffaloes were above the water. The mochi in the brown sugar & ginger sauce looked similar to the buffalo in the water!
The mochi was soaked in the brown sugar & ginger sauce. The toppings were the crushed peanuts and sesame. The texture of mochi was quite springy! With the rich brown sugar and slight spicy ginger sauce, the mochi became the very delicious traditional Taiwanese dessert!
After we had wonderful dessert time, we walked back to Chishang Station (池上車站), Taitung and then got on the train to our destination that day, Yuli, Hualien (花蓮玉里)!
