Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂), a Good Place to Enjoy the Surf Clam, the Delicious Local Speciality of Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan!
On Apr. 21, 2018, after visiting Hokkaido University in the morning, my friend and I decided to leave for Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan from Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan for the famous and high-quality local gourmet, the surf clam (hokkigai) curry! Therefore we went to Oyachi(大谷地) Station to take the bus to Tomakomai!
And after we arrived at the bus stop in Tomakomai, we still needed to walk 12 minutes to our lunch destination!
Although the distance for our lunch was a little long, we eventually arrived at Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂), our lunch destination that day roughly at 13:00!
But the challenge had just started after our arrival! There were lots of customers queueing at Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂)! But we already spent so much time on transportation, we decided to join the line!
During the queueing period, I played the mobile game Fate / Grand Order (FGO) to kill time. (It was a quite excellent game!) By the way, we discovered that we seemed to be the only 2 foreigners walking here! The other customers were mostly Japanese who drove their cars here!
After 40-minute wait, it was almost our turn!
After entering Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂), its signature was exactly Tomakomai's speciality, the surf clam (Hokkigai)! (*The yield of surf clam in Tomakomai, Hokkaido was #1 in Japan!)
The most popular course here was surf clam curry!
Of course, the other surf clam cuisine also looked mouthwatering! If I had had additional stomachs, I would have ordered all of them!
After we ordered, I found that there was a familiar signature on the wall, Masahiro Tanaka (田中將大, Tanaka Masahiro), a MLB baseball player!
Yes, Masahiro Tanaka, the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees of MLB!
Additionally, there were lots of other celebrities's signatures!
By the way, Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂) was really a popular restaurant! There were still full of customers even at 14:00!
The restaurant was so busy that we waited for our curry rice a little longer.
We both ordered the surf clam curry set with Hokkaido's Guarana Soda. It cost me 1,150 JPY (= 10.53 USD).
The amount of surf clam curry was quite enough for a male adult!
The quantity of surf clams on the curry rice were also satisfying!
We spent almost 1 hour taking the bus here from Sapporo and walked 15 minutes after arriving at the bus stop. The long queueing in front of the restaurant took us 40 minutes, and we waited for our surf clam curry about 20 minutes!
But at the moment when I put the surf clam curry rice into my mouth, I knew what I had done for it was worthy!
So many juicy surf clams with firm texture basted slightly sweet Japanese Curry mixed with hot Japanese Rice were, exactly speaking, flawlessly scrumptious!
After we finished the both physically and mentally satisfying surf clam curry, Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂) was closed. There were no longer customers queueing.
We walked half an hour from Marutoma Cafeteria (マルトマ食堂) to JR Tomakomai to take the train back to Sapporo. It was a good stroll for us because we were so full! And the weather in Hokkaido, Japan was so comfortable! I really enjoyed strolling in Hokkaido, Japan!
Frankly Speaking, this restaurant was not easy to access for tourists by foot, but I still thought that our trip to Tomakomai was so meaningful for me!
