Zhongnan Restaurant (忠南飯館), the Popular Restaurant Serving Affordable and Delicious Chinese Dishes in Taipei, Taiwan

In the evening of Dec. 22, 2019, my friends and I were going to have dinner together. That evening we headed to Zhongnan Restaurant (忠南飯館) near Jianguo Weekend Flower Market, Taipei, Taiwan. It was a time-honored restaurant established since 1956.

Zhongnan Restaurant (忠南飯館) was always popular with locals. The seats were often all occupied during lunch and dinner time.

Besides the dine-in customers, lots of customers also chose takeout!

The dishes here were not only various but also quite affordable!

We only ordered 5 dishes. They were the followings:
Stirred dried tofu & shredded pork (豆干肉絲) at 170 TWD (= 5.66 USD)
Mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) at 140 TWD (= 4.66 USD)
Steamed pork belly with pickled mustards (梅菜扣肉) at 200 TWD (= 6.66 USD)
Fried eggs with shrimps (蝦仁炒蛋) at 200 TWD (= 6.66 USD)
Water spinach with shrimp paste (蝦醬空心菜) at 140 TWD (= 4.66 USD)

The rice here was free! Additionally, here were 2 kinds of rices, indica rice and japonica rice. The japonica rice were slightly harder and stickier. Taiwanese preferred japonica rice to indica rice.

The foods here were quickly served! Soon the dishes we ordered came to us one after another!

The steamed pork belly with pickled mustards (梅菜扣肉) was covered by sliced pork belly. The bottom consisted of pickled mustards.

The pork belly without redundant fat was quite matched with rice. It was too hard to resist more rice!

Water spinach with shrimp paste (蝦醬空心菜) at 140 TWD (= 4.66 USD)

The water spinach with shrimp paste (蝦醬空心菜) smelled so mouth-watering. The texture of water spinach was fresh and crispy!

Mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐) at 140 TWD (= 4.66 USD)

Some Sichuan peppers were sprinkled onto our mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐). The tofu and ground pork with hot and spicy sauce were so fantastic with rice!

Stirred dried tofu & shredded pork (豆干肉絲) at 170 TWD (= 5.66 USD)

Although the stirred dried tofu & shredded pork was basically made up of dried tofu and shredded pork, the shredded pork was tender and delicious with dried tofu. This dish was also a good friend of rice!

The fried eggs with shrimps (蝦仁炒蛋) not only looked golden and beautiful but also tasted crispy outside but fluffy inside!

The shrimps inside were fresh and large!

Because the Chinese dishes here were so heavenly, we couldn't help but enjoy our dishes one bite after another bite. Soon we finished all we ordered!

Because we ordered slightly many dishes, we gave up ordering the soup. Luckily, the servant here sent us a large bowl of soybean sprout soup! Although it tasted a little bland, it was very good with the flavorful Chinese dishes.

The Chinese dishes at Zhongnan Restaurant (忠南飯館) were pretty affordable. It only cost us 213 TWD (= 7.11 USD) each. Although the taste here was slightly strong and heavy, the food here was very delicious with rice!
