My Experience about the Ferry from Hokkaido to Akita, Japan (Shin Nihonkai Ferry)

On Apr. 23, 2018, after my friend and I enjoyed the wonderful breakfast at Dormy Inn Premium Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan, we walked around in Downtown Sapporo and Chitose Airport. Then we arrived at JR Minami-Chitose Station at 18:00. We waited for Shin Nihonkai Ferry's shuttle bus to Tomakomai-Higashi Ferry Terminal at 18:25.

The fare for Shin Nihonkai Ferry's shuttle bus was 1,000 JPY(= 8.99 USD). Because Tomakomai-Higashi Ferry Terminal was really hard to access for tourists by foot, we decided to take the shuttle bus.

I took a cat nap after we got on the bus. It took us 45 minutes to get to Tomakomai-Higashi Ferry Terminal.

It was already dark when we arrived at Tomakomai-Higashi Ferry Terminal.

We checked in at the counter after entering the ferry terminal and soon got our ferry tickets!

Because the time was closed to its departure time, and we didn't wanna shop, we just got the tickets and boarded the ferry.

The boarding gate was on the 3rd floor. It was my 1st time to take the overnight ferry. That made me very excited!

Soon I got the cabin I reserved! We both bought the Tourist A cabin at 6,010 JPY (= 54.04 USD) each. Of course there were more comfortable and expensive private rooms on the ferry. But we both considered the cabins were good enough for two men at a reasonable price!

After we deposited our luggage, we walked around and took a look.

The 3rd, 4th and 5th floor were available for passengers. Our cabins were on the 3rd floor.

The facilities looked quite nice!

There were some 24-hour vending machines for hot food!

The shop, restaurant and public bath were on the 4th floor. But they were not open for 24 hours. Checking the business hours was necessary.

We could had seats on the 4th floor. Chatting and enjoying some night snacks there were nice! But we couldn't see any views because it was too dark outside.

The was an arcade to kill some time!

The movie theater and privates rooms were on the 5th floor!

The movie theater was closed at night. It seemed only open in the morning.

The private rooms looked quite good, but of course they were more expensive. I would probably try them next time.

There was also hot water to cook my instant noodles!

Then we had seats and enjoyed our night snacks in the corridor of the 4th floor!

We bought the instant noodles, cheese cod strips and LeTAO's cheese cake before we boarded. We also bought a can of beer and sake at the shop here!

The ferry was on Tsugaru Strait when we finished our night food!

By the way, Wi-Fi was available in the ferry! But it was finite-time and unstable when the ferry was away from the coast.

Because the Wi-Fi was sometimes unstable, I felt asleep when my iPhone lost connecting. And then I woke up next morning.

We could already see the land in the morning!

It also meant that the ferry already arrived at Port of Akita!

There was a room to enjoy the views at the end of the ferry.

We arrived at Port of Akita roughly at 7:30.

We walked down to Akita Ferry Terminal after the ferry was anchored.

The ferry would continue to sail to Niigata, and its final destination was Tsuruga, Fukui, Japan.

Although we got to Akita Ferry Terminal, the shuttle bus to Downtown Akita would start at 08:22. The only thing we could do was just to take a look at the terminal.

The terminal was not large. I just fool around for a while and then start to play FGO (a mobile game).

Personally speaking, Akita Ferry Terminal was also hard to access.

The outside looked quite country.

There were time tables about shuttle bus at every ferry terminal.

I considered that the overnight ferry was really nice! I could move to next destination during my sleeping time. I could save a lot of time!

It time to say goodbye to the ferry! Our bus was coming!

The fare of the shuttle bus to Downtown Akita was 440 JPY (= 4 USD).

After roughly half an hour, we got to Downtown Akita.

We started our short trip in Akita, Japan here!

Because of the ferry schedule, we could only stay in Akita for half a day.

We walked to Senshu Park for cherry blossoms and Akita City Minzoku Geinou Densho-Kan for local culture. And then we had a wonderful lunch at Akita Hinai Jidoriya (秋田比内地鶏や). After that, we got on the train to Hirosaki, Aomori, Japan, our destination that day.
